Welcome to Namrup College, one of the premier institutions of higher education in the easternmost part of Assam. The college was established in 1973 to cater to the needs of higher education of the entire industrial township as well as the neighboring tea gardens and villages. The college endeavors to create a congenial educational environment and encourage the students for quality improvement, handwork, social awareness, and protection of the environment.
Namrup, which grew up as an industrial township in the middle of the twentieth century has historical importance too. This is the second place, in which the legendary Ahom king Syu-Ka-Pha landed when he entered the Brahmaputra Valley in 1228 A.D. after crossing the Patkai Mountain Ranges. The word Namrup comes from the Tai word “Nam-ruk” (‘Nam=Water, Ruk =six’) meaning a place surrounded by six streams. The streams are Kakojan, Labankulajan, Naharpungjan, Abhayapurjan, Hapjan, and Disang. This was the place where political conspirators were deported by the Ahom kings.
